A stunning & rare example of an antique narrow loom 19th century Welsh blanket in subtle grey herringbone weave, natural cream, red, pink, yellow, green with a liquorice black stripe. Handstitched centre seam on stripe. Handwoven. Measures approx 88 inches x 72 inches. Good condition for age. A rare find & a true piece of Welsh history/heritage.
At the turn of the 19th century weaving was very much still a cottage industry in Wales & the blankets were mostly woven on narrow 3ft 6" looms so they fitted into small spaces. Therefore they would weave two lengths & stitch them together on the stripe. Later larger mills took on the wider Dobcross looms but many mills continued with the narrow looms with most changing to plaid/check blankets.
